Samarth Ramdas (1608-1682), the famous saint of Maharashtra and the guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji, the founder of Hindu Padshahi, and the author of Marathi text Dasbodh, was born at a place called Jamb in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra on Chaitra Shukla Navami i.e. Ramnavami Vikram Samvat 1665, according to Shalivahan Shake. In the afternoon of 1530 (1608 AD), he was born in the Deshastha Rigvedi Brahmin family of Jamadagni gotra. The original name of Samarth Ramdas was Narayan Surya (Surya) Ji Pant Kulkarni (Solid). In childhood, he was called Narayan. Due to his birth on the day of Shri Ram Navami, the birthday of Shri Ram, he was named Ramdas. According to another story, In his childhood, he had a vision of Lord Shri Ram. That’s why he called himself Ramdas. Samarth Ramdas’s father’s name was Suryaji Pant and his mother’s name was Ranubai. Suryaji Pant was a worshiper of Suryadev and daily ,Aditya Heart, He used to recite the psalms. He was the patwari of the village but most of his time was spent in sun worship. Mata Ranubai was a distant relative of Sant Eknath’s family. She was also a worshiper of Surya Narayan. By the grace of Suryadev, Suryaji Pant got two sons, Gangadhar Swami and Narayan (Samarth Ramdas). The name of the elder brother of Samarth Ramdas is known to Gangadhar. ,Best, Used to say He was a spiritual master. He has composed a book called Sugamopaya. One day in childhood itself, Mata Ranubai told Narayan, you keep doing pranks all day long, Do some work. don’t see, How much does your elder brother Gangadhar care for his family? , This word of mother went home in Narayan’s mind and after two-three days Narayan left his mischief and sat meditating in a room. When Narayan was nowhere to be seen throughout the day, the mother asked the elder son, Gangadhar, where is your Anuj Narayan. , When Gangadhar told that he did not see Narayan, both got worried and set out to find him., But they were nowhere to be found. In the evening, Mata Ranubai saw Narayan meditating in a room of the house and asked him, Narayan, What are you doing here, Then Narayan replied, I am worrying about the whole world. It is said that Narayan’s routine changed after this incident. At the age of seven, he accepted Hanuman ji as his guru. After this, most of his time was spent in worship in Hanuman temple. it is said that, Once he decided that until Hanuman ji would not give me darshan., Till then I will not take food and water. Seeing this resolution, Hanuman ji appeared and also made him have darshan of Shri Ram.

After relinquishing his home, twelve-year-old Narayan decided to make the land of Takali, a village called Takli, situated at the confluence of the Nandini and Godavari rivers near Nasik, started rigorous penance there. putting, Thereafter, standing in the Godavari river, they used to chant the name of Ram and the Gayatri Mantra. He used to offer bhog to Lord Shri Ram by asking for alms only for five households in the mid-day period. After that, after feeding the animals and birds, he himself used to take part of the prasad. In the afternoon they, Vedanta, Upanishads, He used to study the scriptures. After that, he used to chant the name again. It is said that he completed thirteen crore Ram Naam Japas in twelve years. While doing such severe penance for twelve years, he himself wrote a Ramayana. This is where he composed the prayers of Lord Shri Ramchandra. , Which is famous today by the name Karunashtak. After doing penance, he had self-realization, Then he was only twenty four years old.
In Takli itself, Samarth Ramdas established the first Hanuman temple. Here he was named Ramdas. He always used to say Jai Jai Raghuveer Samarth i.e. used to raise slogans. That’s why people started calling him Samarth Guru Ramdas. After self-realization, Samarth Ramdas set out on a pilgrimage and continued to tour India for twelve years. While roaming around, he reached the Himalayas and after seeing the holy environment of Himalayas, Ramdas’s disinterested nature was awakened. Such a thought came in his mind that now what is the need of wearing this body? , Thinking so, he threw himself into the river Mandakini from a height of one thousand feet, that is, jumped into the river. But at the same time, Prabhuram lifted him up, that is, pulled him up and gave him the inspiration and permission to do religious work. On this, he decided to dedicate his body to religion, he set out for pilgrimage and while traveling he came to Srinagar. In Srinagar, he met Guru Hargobind Singhji Maharaj of the Sikhs. Guru Hargobind Maharaj guided them to be equipped with weapons to protect their religion. During his stay in Srinagar, he saw the plight of the Hindus and the horrific atrocities being committed on them by the Muslims. They understood that without the organization of the Hindus India could not be saved. Seeing the plight of the Hindus, Samarth Ramdas was heartbroken and he along with salvation made the goal of his life to liberate the people from the atrocities of the tyrannical Mughal rulers by establishing Swarajya. He started roaming around while preaching to the people to organize against the rule.
In this effort, he got the benefit of a qualified disciple like Chhatrapati Shri Shivaji Maharaj and he could get the privilege of seeing the dream of establishing Swarajya being realized in his lifetime itself. At that time Maharashtra was ruled by the Marathas and Shivaji Maharaj was greatly influenced by the work of Samarth Ramdas. so impressed that when they met, Then Shivaji Maharaj put his kingdom in the lap of Samarth Ramdas. On this Ramdas said to Shivaji – This kingdom is neither yours nor mine. this kingdom belongs to god, We are only its trustees. Shivaji used to consult him from time to time. Chhatrapati Shivaji and Ramdas Swami met for the first time in 1674 AD and Shivaji accepted Ramdas Swami as his religious teacher and guide. Accordingly, in 1682, at the age of 73, he took samadhi at a place called Sajjangarh in Maharashtra. According to a true incident related to his life coming to life, A dense man Shri Agnihotri died. Agnihotriji’s wife took a vow to commit sati. So she was going to sacrifice herself on the funeral pyre of her husband, adorned with all the ornaments. Then Sant Samarth Ramdas was passing by and without seeing the dead body, he was greeted by that woman. ,May Astaputra Saubhagyavati Bhava, blessed.
On being signaled by the woman to the weeping saint, Samarth Ramdas took a full of water from the nearby Godavari river and, praying to God, rebuked the water on the dead body. The dead came to life and Agnihotri got up. in his disciples , kalyan swami, uddhav swami, dattatray swami , Acharya Gopaldas, Bhima Swami, dinkar swami, Keshav Swami, hanmant swami,Raghunath Swamy,Ranganatha Swamy,Bhola Ram, vena bai, akka bai, Anantbuva Methwadekar, Diwakar Swami, vasudev swami, giridhar swami,meru swami,Anant Kavi, Lord Darshan etc. are also included. Dasbodh by Samarth Ramdas, atmaram, mindfulness, fourteen centuries ,nature,Panch Samadhi ,Pukash Manas Pooja ,Juna Rai has composed texts like Bodh Ram Geet etc. metrics, punching, fourth scale, garden case, There are other compositions of Samarth Ramdas like Sphoot Abhang etc. All these compositions are in Marathi language verses called Ovi. Dasbodh, the main text of Samarth Ramdas, composed in the form of Guru-disciple dialogue, was written by his supreme disciple Yogiraj Kalyan Swami in a beautiful and inaccessible cave named Shivthar Ghal (Cave) in Maharashtra. More than 90 aartis composed by him are sung in every household of Maharashtra. You have also written hundreds of abhangas. Samarth himself was an Advaita Vedanti and Bhaktimargi saint, but seeing the condition of the society at that time, he saw politics in the texts., delusions, administrative science, He has guided on many other subjects. Samarth Ramdas has written more than 100 hymns of gods and goddesses in simple flowing words.
Samarth Ramdas ji, who created a charitable organization in the society through his disciples, built a grand Shri Ram temple in a village named Chafal in Satara district with only the money received from alms. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, he tried to prepare the people for the establishment of Swarajya by establishing 1100 Maths and Akharas. By installing idols of Shri Hanuman ji, the ideal of power and devotion, he ordered all his disciples to be sent to different provinces and spread the teachings of Bhakti Marg and Karma Yoga to the people. Suryanamaskar was propagated to empower the youth. Samarthji gave the right of kirtan 350 years ago to a widowed woman like Sant Venna Swami by giving him the responsibility of Mathapati. He spent the last time of his life at Parli Fort near Satara. The name of this fort was Sajjangarh. A blind artisan named Aranikar, living in Thanjavar village of Tamil Nadu province, made Shriram, After making idols of Sita and Lakshmana, they were sent to Sajjangarh. In front of this idol, Samarthji fasted waterless for the last five days. And by giving prior intimation, Magha Vadya Navami Shalivahan Shaka1603 accordingly, chanting Rama’s name in 1682, sat in Padmasan and became Brahman. That’s where his tomb is located. This samadhi day is known as Dasnavami.
