Single use plastic

Single use plastic: Dairy major Amul has urged the environment ministry to defer the ban on plastic straws for a year. The company has said that there is a shortage of paper straws in the domestic as well as international markets. The government’s ban on single use plastic (including plastic straws) will come into effect from July 1, 2022. RS Sodhi, managing director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), said, “We have written to the environment secretary about the proposed ban on single-use plastic straws. GCMMF sells its milk and other dairy products under the brand name Amul. Sodhi said, the plastic straw is attached to our tetra pack of butter milk and lassi.

Parle Agro requested

Amul needs 10 to 12 lakh plastic straws per day. Sodhi said that we have requested the ministry to give one year time to the local industry to develop facilities for production of paper straws. Another company, Parle Agro, has also made a similar request to the government. Popular brands of Parle include ‘Frutti’ and ‘Appy’.
