According to this story, in the month of Sawan, after bathing in the river Kshipra, many sages gathered to worship Mahakal Shiva of Ujjain, then even a proud prostitute, who emitted an inexhaustible source of fragrance from the body, started to mislead the sages with her evil thoughts. But on reaching there, due to the influence of the penance force of the sages, the inexhaustible source of fragrance of his body disappeared, and his beauty was also destroyed. His intellect changed, his mind shifted away from objects and started moving on the path of devotion. He asked the sages to atone for their sins, then the sage said – you have defiled many people on the strength of sixteen adornments, to avoid this sin, you should fast on sixteen Mondays and worship Lord Shiva by staying in Kashi. The prostitute did the same and reached Shivlok after atonement for her sins. According to folk belief, the compassion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati remains if they observe Monday fast regularly.
