According to media reports, names of three women are being considered for the post of Chief Economic Advisor. It also includes the name of Gita Gopinath, the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund, who has recently announced to leave her post and return to the field of education. Geeta Gopinath will leave the IMF in January.

Women CEA expected for the first time

Apart from Geeta Gopinath, the names of Professor Dr. Pami Dua of Delhi School of Economics and National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) Director General Poonam Gupta are also being discussed for the post of Chief Economic Adviser. Dr. Pami Dua has been a member of RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) for four years. She was the first woman member in this committee and in 2016 she was appointed by the Modi government. Poonam Gupta has been the Chair Professor of RBI at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy. He has recently been appointed as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. Given the way Gita Gopinath has praised the Government of India in fighting the Corona epidemic, she is seen at the forefront of the race as this Chief Economic Advisor.

Appointment of CEA before budget

In fact, on February 1, 2022, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget. And before that the government has to appoint a new Chief Economic Adviser. Because what will be prepared for the Economic Survey 2021-22 is the responsibility of the Chief Economic Advisor only.

He has said that he will return to the education world after the completion of his term. Krishnamurthy Subramanian teaches at the Indian Business School (IBS) in Hyderabad.
