Reservation announced in Kashmir

Srinagar, It has been announced to give reservation to the people of the Pahari community in Jammu and Kashmir. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced this on Tuesday, the second day of his visit to Jammu and Kashmir. In Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, Amit Shah announced that the Pahari community, apart from Gujjars and Bakkarwals, would soon get reservation in education and jobs as Scheduled Tribes (STs). Significantly, along with increasing the number of seats through delimitation, a proposal has also been sent to reserve nine assembly seats for STs in Kashmir.

However, during the rally on Tuesday, Amit Shah said that the commission constituted by the Lieutenant Governor has sent the report. It has recommended reservation for Gurjar, Bakarwal and Pahari communities. It will be given soon. Shah claimed that reservation was possible only after the special status under Article 370 was removed. By removing it, minorities, dalits, tribals, hill people will get their rights.

Significantly, Hindus are a religious minority in the Muslim-majority Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. If Pahari people are given ST status, it will be the first instance of reservation for any linguistic group in India. To do this the central government needs to amend the reservation law in Parliament. However, Amit Shah in his rally criticized the rest of the parties in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that for 75 years three families have ruled the state and the people of this state remained backward.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir from Monday evening. He addressed a rally in Rajouri district of Jammu on Tuesday. The Home Minister offered prayers at the Vaishno Devi temple in the morning before holding the rally on Tuesday. Union Home Minister reached Katra temple via Sanjhi Chhat helipad. He was accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister Jitendra Singh. This is Amit Shah’s first visit to the Vaishno Devi temple after becoming the Union Home Minister. He will address a rally in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday, the day of Dussehra.
