repression is not the way

Wickremesinghe should take note of this. Activists at the main resistance site in Colombo have clearly stated that they have no intention of returning from there. I am also ready to disobey the order of the court.

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been given the wrong advice that by adopting the path of repression, he can suppress the ongoing public discontent in the country. Emergency was imposed in the country as soon as he took over as the President. For the past one week, the round of arrests is going on across the country. Apart from this, the activists associated with the movement are being closely monitored. Meanwhile, the President has also been publicly making statements that there will be no arbitrary arrests. While there is news that the police are being sent from house to house and the police is interrogating the families of the people associated with the movement. Several arrested activists have been booked for causing damage to public property during Aragalaya. Among the prominent activists who have been arrested is Joseph Stalin, leader of the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Union. Meanwhile, Wickremesinghe has also started talks with the agitating leaders and the opposition. During this, the opposition leaders who met him raised the issue of arrest of the workers. On the other hand, the agitators have demanded immediate removal of the Presidential Emergency.

At the same time, he said that instead of putting the activists associated with the movement in jail, it would be appropriate for the government to pay attention to the causes of the movement. He has asked Wickremesinghe to set up a commission to find out the reason for the resistance which has been going on for almost four months. If you observe, Wickremesinghe will feel that this is a wise suggestion somewhere. The movement arose due to the growing economic troubles in the country. Unless these problems are resolved, the situation will only get more complicated by the way of repression. They should note that the activists at the main resistance site in Colombo have clearly stated that they have no intention of returning from there. They are also ready to disobey the order of the court in this regard. When the will is so firm, the repression becomes false.
