Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed President of Sri Lanka

Colombo. The new president has been elected after a more than three-month-long agitation by the people of Sri Lanka, which is facing economic crisis, but it seems that the people have not got freedom from the Rajapaksa family. Ranil Wickremesinghe, who became interim President in place of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country, has been elected as the new President of the country. Wickremesinghe got 134 votes in the election held by the votes of MPs. Dullas Alhapparuma, considered a strong contender to challenge him, got 82 votes. A day earlier, Sajith Premadasa withdrew in support of Alhapparuma.

However, after 44 years, secret voting was held in the Sri Lankan Parliament. For the first time since 1978, the President was elected not through a mandate, but through a secret vote of the MPs. Keep in mind that 73-year-old Ranil Wickremesinghe has been Prime Minister six times. Ranil became the Prime Minister for the sixth time after the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa a few days ago. In the Sri Lankan Parliament of 225 members, Wickremesinghe got 134 votes and Dullas Alhapparuma 82 votes. The third candidate, Anura Kumara Disanayake, got only three votes.

Wickremesinghe will complete the remaining term of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. That is, he will be the President till November 2024. He will take oath on Thursday. With the announcement of the election results, Ranil Wickremesinghe’s opposition also started. Outside the Parliament House, many people demanded the resignation of the new President. Talking to a representative of a foreign newspaper, the protesters said- Ranil has the support of the Rajapaksa brothers’ party. The Rajapaksa brothers are still in power even though they are not in power. A new all party government should be formed in the country. Wickremesinghe should be kept out of this. We will continue to oppose Wickremesinghe till this demand of ours is fulfilled.
