President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday congratulated Avani Lekhara, the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games, on her stupendous achievement and said India was proud of her outstanding performance. The 19-year-old Lekra achieved the feat by winning the gold medal in the women’s R-2 10m Air Rifle Class SH1 at the Tokyo Paralympic Games shooting event on Monday.
The President said in a tweet, “Another daughter of India has given us an opportunity to be proud of. Congratulations to Avni Lekhara for creating history and becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold in Paralympics. India is proud of your excellent performance. With your extraordinary achievement, our tricolor was hoisted on the podium.
The President also congratulated discus thrower Yogesh Kathunia and javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia and Sunder Singh Gurjar for winning silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. He said in another tweet, “Very happy to see the players doing the country proud in the Paralympics. Yogesh Kathunia won silver medal in discus throw, Devendra Jhajharia and Sunder Singh Gurjar won silver and bronze in javelin throw respectively. Congratulations….. every Indian is singing the pride of your success.
Apart from the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Avni and tweeted saying that the phenomenal performance Avani Lekhara. It was possible because of your hardworking nature and passion for shooting. Congratulations on winning the gold. This is indeed a special moment for Indian sports.
