Highlights

  • Mumbai to Ahmedabad ticket price available at Rs 1,399 on Go First
  • Tickets between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,200 are also available on Mumbai-Bangalore route.
  • To attract fliers in the aviation sector gave rise to a price war between airlines

what Have you ever thought of flying from Mumbai to Ahmedabad for just Rs 1,399 or between Mumbai and Bangalore for around Rs 2,000 or less? This has now become possible as the fierce competition in the aviation sector has led to a price war between airlines to attract fliers. A closer look at the airfares reveals that the ticket price from Mumbai to Ahmedabad is Rs 1,399 on Go First and Rs 1,497 for travel on Akasa Air on September 9. IndiGo, the largest domestic airline, is offering tickets on the same route for Rs 1,609.

Offer on Mumbai-Bangalore route too

Similar is the case with the Mumbai-Bengaluru route, with tickets ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,200. While Akasa Air is offering tickets on September 9 for Rs 1,997, IndiGo is offering tickets for Rs 2,208. There were fears of a price war between Indian airlines after the Civil Aviation Ministry removed the airfares cap from August 31. Industry experts said the high competition among airlines can benefit fliers and many airlines may offer discounts as per demand.

Akasa Air Increases Competition

Interestingly, the prices have come down mostly on the routes on which the recently launched Akasa Air has started its operations. An expert said the aviation ministry’s move has given airlines flexibility in fixing airfares as they can now charge as per their policies. The entry of Akasa Air has increased the competition in the aviation sector. To attract fliers, some airlines have already started offering tickets at lower rates. Earlier, the Ministry of Civil Aviation had said that after reviewing the current status of scheduled domestic operations, i.e. passenger demand for air travel, the removal of the fare band notified from time to time in respect of airfares will be done with effect from August 31. The decision has been taken from The ministry had imposed lower and upper limits on airfares after the resumption of services in May, 2020 after the initial two-month nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19. Thereafter, the borders were relaxed in a phased manner in line with the improvement in air traffic in the country.
