  • CCPA’s focus on quality of helmets, domestic pressure cookers and LPG cylinders

Flipkart Fine: The common customer feels cheated by the cheap quality products being sold indiscriminately on e-commerce websites like Amazon and Flipkart. In the absence of strict action, the customer is not able to do much even after getting a substandard product. But an important decision of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has given great relief to the customers.

CCPA has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Walmart-owned Flipkart. The penalty has been imposed on Flipkart for allowing the sale of domestic pressure cookers that do not meet quality standards through its platform.

All 598 customers will have to return the money

CCPA Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare said the e-commerce company has been fined Rs 1 lakh for allowing the sale of poor quality pressure cookers on its platform and violating the rights of consumers. Khare said that Flipkart has been directed to inform the buyers of all 598 pressure cookers sold on its platform, recall the defective pressure cookers and refund the money to the consumers. Apart from this, the company has also been asked to submit the compliance report within 45 days.

Rules are applicable from February 2021

From February 2021, the government has mandated the use of standard and quality marks on domestic pressure cookers to protect consumers from the risk of accident and in the interest of the public at large. All domestic pressure cookers are required to conform to the ‘IS 2347:2017’ standard.

The role of Flipkart came to the fore in the sale of substandard cookers

According to the CCPA, Flipkart in its ‘Terms of Use’ mentions ‘Powered by Flipkart’ on every invoice of the product and classifies sellers as ‘Gold, Silver and Bronze’ for distribution of various benefits. This explains the role played by the e-commerce company in selling pressure cookers on this platform. The authority further said that Flipkart has earned a total fee of Rs 1,84,263 through the sale of such pressure cookers on its platform.

Government’s focus on these three products

CCPA has launched a nationwide campaign to increase the quality awareness of the products among the consumers. Helmets, household pressure cookers and LPG cylinders are the three products CCPA is focusing on in its campaign.
