SpiceJet suspended 50% of its flights

New Delhi, Aviation regulatory agency Directorate General of Civil Aviation, DGCA has banned 50 per cent of SpiceJet flights due to persistent technical glitches. The DGCA on Wednesday ordered SpiceJet to operate a maximum of 50 per cent of its approved summer flights for eight weeks in view of several recent incidents. Significantly, since the 19th of last month, there were at least eight incidents of technical snag in SpiceJet planes, for which the DGCA had issued a show-cause notice to the company on July 6.

Meanwhile, reacting to the DGCA’s order, SpiceJet has said that it will work as per the agency’s instructions. He said- DGCA’s order will not affect the operation of our flights. Earlier, the DGCA in its order on Wednesday said that in view of the various site inspections, inspections and response to the show cause notices submitted by SpiceJet, for the continued maintenance of safe and reliable transport service, for the summer season of SpiceJet. The number of permitted flights is capped at 50 per cent for eight weeks.

This is probably the strictest action against any airline in recent times. In less than three weeks, eight incidents involving the safety of aircraft were reported. In the first week of July, a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Dubai had to divert towards Karachi due to a fault in the indicator light. Two days before that, SpiceJet’s plane flying from Kandal in Gujarat to Mumbai had developed a crack in the upper windshield, due to which it had to make a priority landing. Following these incidents, the DGCA issued a show cause notice to the company.
