Monkeypox does not require global vaccination, smallpox vaccine may work; Experts opinion

After appearing in many countries of the world, a disease called monkeypox has knocked in India. So far, four cases of monkeypox have been registered in the country. In such a situation, the Indian pharmaceutical industry is considering making vaccines and medicines for the prevention of this viral disease.

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, which has developed the vaccine coveshield of Kovid 19 in India, informed the media that they are organizing the development of mRNA vaccine for monkeypox with their global partner Novavax. Poonawalla also said that they are also looking at importing smallpox vaccine produced by Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic.

According to the World Health Organization, the smallpox vaccine may also be useful for monkeypox. This vaccine should only be given to people who have been in contact with monkeypox patients, ie those who are at high risk of contracting the disease. The WHO does not currently recommend mass vaccination for monkeypox.

Keep in mind that the disease of smallpox has become almost anonymous in India. In such a situation, we do not have a vaccine related to it. On the other hand, eminent microbiologist and virologist Dr Gagandeep Kang believes that there is no need for global vaccination against monkeypox. As far as the drug for this disease is concerned, the vaccine developed for the treatment of smallpox has already been recommended by the European Agency in January 2022.
