Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave this information in reply to a question by Kunwar Danish Ali in Lok Sabha.

Pankaj Choudhary said that in 2013-14 (during the tenure of the UPA government), Rs 9.20 per liter of excise duty was charged on unbranded petrol and Rs 3.46 per liter excise duty was charged on diesel. But at present, excise duty is being charged at Rs 27.90 per liter on unbranded petrol and Rs 21.80 per liter on diesel. However, in the year 2020-21 of the Corona epidemic, the Central Government’s income from excise duty on petrol and diesel has doubled. The government itself has given this information in Parliament. In 2020-21 (from April 2020 to March 2021), the central government has got revenue of Rs 3.72 lakh crore from excise duty on petrol diesel whereas in 2019-20 only Rs 1.78 lakh crore was received as excise duty.
