Mahinda banned from leaving the country

Colombo. Gotabaya Rajapaksa has finally resigned as the President of Sri Lanka. He told the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Yapa Abhayawardene that Gotabaya has sent his resignation from Singapore. After his resignation, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the interim President. He became the President of Sri Lanka for seven days. The country will elect a new President on July 20. It is being told that Ranil Wickremesinghe will be the presidential candidate from the ruling party ie the party of Rajapaksa family.

However, Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice Jayanta Jayasuriya administered the oath of office to Ranil Wickremesinghe on Friday. Earlier, Speaker Abhaywardene told that the Parliament will meet on Saturday. He appealed to the public to maintain a peaceful environment for the MPs so that they can participate in the process of presidential election.

On the other hand, the court swung into action after Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country while in office. The country’s Supreme Court has issued an order saying that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa cannot leave the country. It is worth mentioning that Basil Rajapaksa had tried to run out of the country from the airport like Mahinda Rajapaksa but he did not succeed. Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned after the Sri Lankan nationals started protesting and since then there is no information about him.

Significantly, the citizens of Sri Lanka have been protesting for three months. After the terrible economic crisis started in the country, people took to the streets and started a movement to oust the Rajapaksa family from power. At present the situation in Sri Lanka is very bad. Along with food and drink, there is a huge shortage of all things like petrol, diesel, electricity, medicine in the country. Only after the new President and the new government comes, there will be a concrete initiative to improve the situation.
