Know why Zaheer Khan was called ‘Gyan Baba’ of Team India

Zaheer Khan: Former Indian bowler Zaheer Khan has been one of the best fast bowlers in the history of Indian cricket, leading India’s bowling for almost a decade. Be it seaming tracks or batsmen-friendly tracks, Zaheer Khan has always helped the Indian cricket team win matches. Zaheer played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is for India during his long international career. Zaheer Khan was seen some time back in Vikram Sathaye’s chat show ‘What the Duck’, where he revealed many interesting anecdotes.

The show’s host Sathaye asked Zaheer Khan why he is called the ‘Gyan Baba’ of the Indian team. To this the cricketer replied that there is no particular reason to call me ‘Gyan Baba’. Don’t know how it just started. Maybe I used to go to the bowlers and always give them advice, I think that’s why it started.

Apart from this, Zaheer Khan revealed many interesting things. Under the captaincy of former South African captain Graeme Smith, the South African team was one of the best teams in the world. But Zaheer Khan’s bowling used to trouble Graeme Smith a lot. He took his wicket many times. Once an interesting incident happened during the India-South Africa match. This was revealed by Vikram Sathaye in his show What the Duck, when Zaheer went there. The incident was about India’s tour of South Africa in December 2006, where Indian players were cheering for Zaheer, regardless of who was bowling.

Sathaye said, “It was a lot of fun on the 2006 tour. Me and Harsha Bhogle were sitting in the commentary box. There was a microphone near the stumps. At that time Sreesanth was bowling to Graeme Smith. In the slips he is saying, well. Bowling Jack! Jack bowled well. It was Kumble..Kumble was bowling to Smith..Come on, Zaheer! Amazing! And I saw Indian players sledging Smith a lot.”

Zaheer replied about that famous incident and said, “It’s good to feel this kind of advantage on a batsman. The funny thing was that I didn’t need to do anything.”
