Know more about Suriya, who has won a National Award this year for his performance in ‘Soorarai Potru’

In ‘Soorarai Pottru’ Mara is ambitious, determined and vulnerable all at once. Inspired by GR Gopinath’s biographical memoir Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey, the film saw the actor undergo a profound body transformation to briefly play the younger version of his character.

Apart from the hurdles he faced as an actor, he faced hurdles as a producer of the film. He was one of the few actor-producers in the industry who pioneered the OTT (over-the-top) method. When ‘Soorarai Pottru’, a film made for the big screen, landed on OTT, it faced resistance from stakeholders in the Tamil Nadu theater scene. However, the film garnered praise from audiences and critics alike after its release, becoming one of the most popular films of 2020.

After the success of ‘Soorarai Pottru’, Suriya once again surprised fans with his realistic portrayal in Gyanvel directed Jai Bheem (2021). In the film, he played Chandru, a lawyer who saves the day with his reasoned arguments in court instead of larger-than-life action sequences, where the protagonist rises to the occasion as a conspicuous savior. Jai Bheem, which was released on Amazon Prime Video like his previous outing, caught everyone’s attention at the 94th Academy Awards this year, when a video of the film started streaming on the official Oscars YouTube channel.

Suriya’s latest Itharakkum Thunindhavan (2022), co-starring Priyanka Arul Mohan, received a mixed response. However, the actor followed it up with Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram, where he managed to steal the thunder with a brief cameo role, despite the presence of three of South cinema’s biggest stars in full-length roles in the film- Kamal Haasan. , Vijay Sethupathi and Fahad Faasil. It’s hard to point fingers at why and how his cameo as a drug lord Rolex came to fruition.

Was it true that Rolex’s ruthlessness, which is made clear in a scene where it beheads a man, is in stark contrast to the gray characters he played before, whose opposition is driven by a moral or ethical conundrum? Or was it that Suriya’s fans couldn’t wait to see her as a powerful character on the big screen once again, albeit in a cameo role?

One will probably have to wait and see to know what the actor has in store for his fans and benefactors. As of now, Suriya has his hands full with upcoming projects like Vetrimaaran’s Vaadivasal, M Muttiah’s Viruman and Bala’s Vanangan. Meanwhile, it has also been announced that Suriya has become the first South Indian actor to be invited to the Oscars committee, with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences releasing the list of 397 actors invited to the Academy’s Class of 2022 in June. Also, Suriya is entering Bollywood as a producer with the Hindi remake of Akshay Kumar starrer Soorarai Pottru.

Needless to say that 2022 is going to be an important year for Surya Shivakumar, who has been my friend for the last four decades.
