Noel Gallagher

As the lead guitarist, main songwriter, conceptualist and occasional vocalist for Oasis, Noel Gallagher played a tremendous role in shaping British rock music from the 1990s and beyond. He was the brains behind the group’s biggest hits, which drew equally from the riff-heavy guitar heroics of the Who and the smart, melodic pop hooks of the Beatles. Although Oasis maintained a near-permanent place in the tabloids — thanks in large part to Noel’s public battles with his younger brother, Liam, as well as the wild lifestyles that both siblings led — Noel’s songwriting helped maintain the band’s position in the charts, too, with more than 20 songs reaching the Top Ten in England. Tensions within the group eventually reached a boiling point in August 2009, prompting Noel to leave Oasis and launch Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in 2011, where he continued to refine his songcraft while gradually incorporating strong elements of electro-dance and psychedelia. This evolution was traced on Back the Way We Came: Vol. 1 (2011-2021), a hits collection released on the tenth anniversary of the self-titled debut from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Noel was raised in the suburbs of Manchester, England. His father was an alcoholic who regularly beat his three sons, prompting Noel’s mother to take the children and leave her husband in 1982. Noel continued to have a rough childhood, getting expelled from school at the age of 15 and developing a reputation with the local police. At the same time, he discovered a love for rock music and began playing the guitar, even writing some of his future hits — including “Live Forever” — while still a teenager. By his early twenties, Noel had grown confident enough in his abilities to audition for Inspiral Carpets, a Manchester band whose vocalist had recently quit. Although he didn’t get the job, the band asked him to tour with them as a roadie.

Personal Life

In 1997, Noel Gallagher married Meg Matthews in Las Vegas. When they met, Noel was actually dating Meg’s housemate, the MTV presenter Rebecca de Ruvo. Meg and Noel’s daughter Anais was born in 2000 but they divorced shortly after her birth. The grounds for divorce was Noel’s affair with the Scottish publicist Sara MacDonald.

Noel and Sara have a son together, named Donovan. He was born in 2007. Noel Gallagher is good friends with Russell Brand and often appeared on Brand’s BBC Radio 2 show. Noel Gallagher is a keen sports fan and follows Manchester City. He is a close friend of the former City player Joey Barton. He is also a fan and friend of the boxer Ricky Hatton. In 2008, Noel Gallagher announced that he was selling his Ibiza home because it was too close to the home of James Blunt, who, he says, makes “terrible music.”

Career

Noel Gallagher auditioned for Inspiral Carpets to become the new vocalist of the band in his early twenties. Though he was unsuccessful in this attempt, he became a part of the band’s road crew which eventually allowed him to dream bigger.

In 1991, when he returned from the tour of Inspiral Carpets, Noel learnt about his brother’s involvement with a local band called the Rain.

Though he was initially asked to join the Rain as the band manager, he persistently insisted on taking over the creative control of the band. Noel Gallagher soon joined the band as a solo songwriter, which earned him the nickname ‘The Chief’. Soon after this, the band’s name was changed to Oasis.

Noel Gallagher was instrumental in providing Oasis with its first critical and commercial success by writing the first single, Supersonic. The band came out with its debut album Definitely Maybe, in 1994.

Over the years, the band came out with six more albums, namely, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (1995), Be Here Now (1997), Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000), Heathen Chemistry (2002), Don’t Believe The Truth (2005) and Dig Out Your Soul (2008).

Following a tiff with Liam, in 2009,  Noel Gallagher his split from the band. Though the rest of Oasis performed together under the name of Beady Eye, Noel separated his ways and stayed out of the public eye.

In 2011, he marked his presence in the music industry, with his rock band, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Later that year, he released his first single, The Death of You and Me, which was followed by his second album Chasing Yesterday. The third album, Who Built the Moon? was released six years later.

His band also served as the headliner for a benefit concert named ‘We Are Manchester’ on 9th September 2017, to mark the reopening of Manchester Arena

In 2019, he toured the United States with an American rock band called The Smashing Pumpkins.
