just a rethink

In the last eight years, more than 400 people have been arrested under the sedition law. While doing so, no care was taken of the Supreme Court’s ruling that keeping any idea or keeping books etc. related to it is not sedition.

The Government of India first opposed the petition moved in the Supreme Court to reconsider the constitutionality of the sedition law. He said that in the case of Government of India Vs Kedarnath Singh, the Supreme Court has confirmed the validity of this law. The government again raised the question that when the Constitution Bench has given its verdict in this matter, how can a three-judge Bench hear this issue? But only a few days later, the government had a change of heart – or at least that is what it has tried to signal. The government told the Supreme Court that it would reconsider the relevance of the law on its own. During the debate in the Supreme Court about this, the Solicitor General said that the work that Pandit Nehru could not do, the present government is going to do it. People are bound to be blown away by this statement.

After all, the government has not said that it is going to repeal this law. He just said to reconsider it. This has been seen in many circles of society as a ploy to postpone the review in the Supreme Court. After all, the wholesale rate with which this law was imposed on the people during the tenure of Narendra Modi government had never happened before. According to a report, more than 400 people have been arrested under this law in the last eight years. While doing so, no care was taken of the Supreme Court’s ruling that keeping any idea or keeping books etc. related to it is not sedition. The court had said that this law can be applicable only if the person is involved in the actual activity of inciting violence or rebellion. And then it’s not just about this law. The kind of sections included in the UAPA and the manner in which the National Security Act has been used, there is a solid ground to doubt the intention of the government. However, now the government has had a change of heart, it will be considered only if it decides to repeal this law at the earliest.
