New thinking in foreign policy?

Under the new circumstances, it is no longer possible for a large and important country like India to remain a victim of ambiguity for a long time. That is why the latest statement of the External Affairs Minister has drawn attention.

The announcement of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to always stand by the Global South and to make continuous efforts to strengthen the influence of the United Nations is significant. Jaishankar expressed this resolution in a special statement on United Nations Day- 24 October. If this statement is based on thorough re-evaluation and is considered, it will be seen as a significant change in Indian foreign policy. Because from the 1990s till recently, India not only lost the natural leadership of the developing countries in the world due to lack of clear stance about it, but its voice in global affairs also got weakened. This period was an attempt to make equation with the rich countries. But the overall result was that the rich countries kept looking at India from the point of view of a market and at the same time started considering it as their hanger. Such is the image of India in the world. Nonetheless, India has demonstrated its ability to make independent decisions in its foreign policy since the start of the Ukraine War. In fact, the world has been divided into two camps under the circumstances created after the Ukraine war.

If despite the power of the Western media to impose a narrative, it is now clear to all that America and other Western countries have not been able to manage the world in their own way in the conditions created after this war. In such a situation, it has not been possible for a big and important country like India to remain a victim of ambiguity for a long time. That is why the latest statement of the External Affairs Minister has drawn attention. In practice, India has meanwhile maintained an active role in emerging alternative frameworks such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. At the same time, he has also been involved to an extent in the growing phenomenon in the world of separation of business from the dollar. This has increased interest in India in the Global South. Now the statement of the External Affairs Minister will be taken as an indication that the role that India has played recently is a result of its changing thinking.
