IRCTC News: Railway gave a shock, now full fare will have to be paid for a child younger than 5 years
IRCTC News: Indian Railways has given another big blow to the common railway passengers after abolishing the concession of senior citizens. Till now, children up to five years of age used to travel free of cost in the railways. But now your children below the age of 5 years will also have to pay the full rent. However this arrangement is optional. If you ask for a separate seat for a child between the age of 1 to 5 years, you will have to pay the full fare. On the other hand, if you do not want a separate seat, then you can only enter its name in the ticket. You will not have to pay the rent separately.
Let us tell you that the railways used to give these two options to the children from 5 to 12 years, the difference being that in case of not taking the seat, the child was charged only half ticket. Railways has implemented this arrangement on IRCTC website with immediate effect.
Now only children younger than 1 year will travel for free
If you look at the new railway rules on the IRCTC website, now only children from 0 to 1 year will be able to travel completely free. As per Circular No. 12 issued by Indian Railways on 06.03.2020, if a child below 5 years of age travels in Railway, then he/she need not make reservation in Reserve bogie. Children below 5 years can travel in the train without a ticket. Now he will have to pay the full fare on booking a seat like a 12-year-old child.
Children’s ticket rules in railway
- Age 1-4 years: Child birth / no birth option will be available. If the seat is not taken, the child will travel for free. Full charge will have to be paid on taking the berth
- age 5-11 years: If you choose a berth for a child, then you will have to pay full charge, if you choose a child seat without a berth, then half the fare

indian railway ticket booking rules for kids
According to the rules of the Railways, taking full berth for a child between the age of 6-11 years, the railway will have to pay the full fare. If you do not take a full berth, you will have to pay only half the ticket price. However, when the ticket for children below 5 years of age also requires you to pay the full fare. The Passenger Reservation System has not put any option of not taking the child’s berth after filling the names of children in the age group of one to four years.
If the name and age of the child is given, then the full ticket will be charged
However, when it comes to children below the age of 5 years, the passenger reservation system has not put any option of not taking a child’s berth after filling the names of children between the age of one to four years. This means that now if you make a reservation, your child, whose age is between 1.4 years, will also have to take his ticket. This option has been removed on the website of Railways or IRCTC, in which children up to 1.4 years can travel free of cost.
