Interesting contest in Azamgarh, Rampur

Lucknow, The contest has become interesting in the by-elections being held in two Lok Sabha seats of Uttar Pradesh- Azamgarh and Rampur. Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has refused his wife Tanzeem Fatima to contest from Rampur seat. On the other hand, in Azamgarh too, instead of betting on the Dalit candidate, the SP has fielded a candidate from the Mulayam family. On the last day of nomination, the party fielded Dharmendra Yadav from Azamgarh seat. He has previously been an MP from Badaun.

Samajwadi Party had announced to field Dharmendra Yadav from Azamgarh and Azam Khan’s wife Tanzim Fatima as its candidate from Rampur. But soon after that the candidate of Rampur was changed. Asim Raza has been made SP candidate in place of Tanzeem Fatima from Rampur seat. Azam Khan himself made this announcement after reaching the office of the Samajwadi Party. Asim Raza has been the SP’s Rampur Nagar president and is considered close to Azam Khan.

The candidate was changed just before the nomination for Rampur seat. Asim Raza’s name was announced about an hour before the end of the nomination time. On the other hand, BJP has once again fielded Bhojpuri actor Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirhua’ from Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat. ‘Nirhua’ had also contested the 2019 parliamentary elections from this seat. However, he lost the Azamgarh seat to then Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. BJP has fielded Ghanshyam Lodhi from Rampur seat. Earlier it was being said that Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi would contest from Rampur seat.

However, Azamgarh seat fell vacant due to resignation of Akhilesh Yadav and Rampur seat Azam Khan. Apart from the two Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, by-elections will also be held in Sangrur seat of Punjab. The seat fell vacant after the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Bypolls to three Lok Sabha and seven assembly seats will be held on June 23 and the counting of votes will take place on June 26.
