Avani Lekhara Wins Gold: India’s para shooter Avani Lekhara has created history in the Tokyo Paralympic Games. Avani sets new Paralympic record in Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event Making a target on Gold. Avani made a total score of 249.6 which is a new record for Paralympic Games. China’s Si Zhang (248.9 points) won the silver medal in this event while Ukraine’s Irina Skhetnik (227.5 points) won the bronze medal. This is India’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, before which Indian athletes had won two silver medals yesterday.
Avni had finished seventh in the qualification round of this event. He performed brilliantly in the final and won the gold medal. With this, this is India’s third confirmed medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Earlier Nishad Kumar won silver medal in high jump and Bhavina Patel in table tennis. Another para-athlete from India, Vinod Kumar, won a bronze medal in the F52 category of disc throw, but his result is currently on hold.
Avni got tough competition from Chinese player
In this nine-round final match, Avni was defeated by a Chinese athlete. Si Zhang faced a tough competition. Zhang had secured the top position in the qualification round and was a strong contender for gold in this match. However, Avni defeated Zhang on the basis of her infallible marks and took the gold in her name. Avani scored a total of 249.6 in nine rounds with 52.0, 51.3, 21.6, 20.8, 21.2, 20.9, 21.2, 20.1, 20.5 which is a new Paralympic Games record.
Was a victim of road accident at the age of 11
Avni hails from Jaipur, Rajasthan. She had become a victim of a road accident when she was just 11 years old. In this accident, Avni was paralyzed due to spinal cord injury. In the women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event, Avni is ranked fifth in the world rankings.
