Work from Home There is great news for the employees. According to the government’s commerce ministry, work from home (WFH) will be allowed for a maximum period of one year in a special economic zone. Also, it can be increased to 50 percent of the total employees. The commerce ministry has notified a new rule 43A for WFH in the Special Economic Zones Rules, 2006.

Applicable for special economic zones

Keeping in view the demand of the industry, a notification has been issued by the Ministry to provide for a nationwide uniform WFH policy in all Special Economic Zones (SEZs). The new rule provides for work from home for a certain category of employees of a unit in a SEZ. These include employees of IT/ITES SEZ units (employees who are temporarily disabled), employees who are traveling and those working offsite, the ministry said. It states that the WFH can be increased to a maximum of 50 per cent of the total employees including contractual employees of the unit.

Permitted for a maximum of one year

The ministry said, work from home has now been allowed for a maximum period of one year. However, it can be further extended by the DC for one year at a time on the request of the units. In respect of SEZ units whose employees are already working from home, the notification has provided for a transition period of 90 days for obtaining approval.
