Hurricane ‘Sitrang’ wreaks havoc in Bangladesh: Nine people killed, 1 million reached camps

Dhaka. In Bangladesh, nine people have died due to cyclonic storm ‘Sitrang’ while around one million people have taken shelter in shelter camps. Officials gave this information on Tuesday. The ‘Sitrang’ storm made landfall in southern Bangladesh late on Monday night. It was a matter of relief that the local authority was successful in taking about one million people to safer places before its arrival.

A government official named Zebun Nahar told the media that nine people, including three members of a family from the eastern district of Comilla, were killed when the tree fell. According to Kamrul Ahsan, secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management, people evacuated from remote islands and low-lying areas of river banks were kept in thousands of multi-storey shelters and spent their nights there.
Officials said that in some cases the police had to persuade villagers who did not want to leave their homes.

Heavy rains lashed most parts of the country on Monday, while cities such as Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal received 324 millimeters (13 inches) of rain due to excess rainfall. Some 33,000 Rohingya refugees, controversially relocated from Myanmar to a hurricane-prone island in the Bay of Bengal, have been instructed to stay at home and no casualties have been reported.
Thousands of people were sheltered in more than 100 relief sites on Monday in West Bengal, India, but no damage was reported and are now returning to their homes on Tuesday.

In the year 2020, a severe cyclone ‘Amphan’ in the Bay of Bengal killed more than 100 people in Bangladesh and India and affected lakhs of people. In recent years, the death toll from hurricanes has decreased due to accurate forecasts and more effective evacuation plans. (talk)
