What is Holika Dahan?

Holika Dahan coincides with the full moon day in the month of Phalguna according to the Hindu lunar calendar, a day also known as Falgun Purnima. A day before Rangwali Holi, when people use colors to play with each other, Holika Dahan takes place. On the eve of Holi, people pray to the almighty and perform Holika Dahan rituals. A bonfire is organized to commemorate the victory of good over evil. Dahan is done during Pradosh Kaal (after sunset) while Purnimasi Tithi prevails.

Holika Dahan Legend ( Holi 2022 )

Legend has it that a young boy named Prahlad was a devout Lord Vishnu devotee. His father Hiranyakashipu felt jealous seeing his son’s excessive devotion to Lord Vishnu and ordered his sister Holika (who had the boon of being safe in the fire) to kill Prahlad. Aunt Holika makes the devotee Prahlad sit on her lap and sits on a wooden log lit by the fire. The young boy prays to the Lord, who destroys the powers of his Aunt Holika in his benevolent Narasimha avatar. Lord Vishnu not only saves the devotee Prahlad but also kills the cruel ruler and his father Hiranyakashipu and Holika. From that day Holika Dahan Puja is dedicated to the Narasimha avatar of Lord Vishnu. In this avatar the Lord appears as half male and half lion. He assumed this unusual form to end all the atrocities committed by the greedy Hiranyakashipu. During Holika Dahan Puja, devotees offer water, turmeric, coconut to the bonfire and seek blessings for a blissful life. ( Holi 2022 )
