The governor said, he had to accept his mistake. I knew that the person (the government official who wrote the letter questioning the appointment) was innocent, but I wanted to send the message that these coercive tactics will not work for me.
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan interacting with the media at Raj Bhavan.
Taking a shocking step, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan released a video. The video was of him allegedly being harassed at a function held at Kannur University in 2019. There is an ongoing dispute with the Governor and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of the state. The Governor also released the letters sent to him by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his replies on the functioning of the universities of the state in the media.
Governor Arif Mohammad Khan showed videos of the incident on two large screens installed in the Raj Bhavan auditorium. He said that in these videos a senior functionary can be seen stopping the police from doing their work. He said that this officer is now working in the Chief Minister’s Office. Khan said, in a state where people have been arrested for wearing black shirts, such things happen. The policemen tried to control the situation and prevented people from reaching me.
Demonstration at Kannur University
“At present, a senior functionary working in the Chief Minister’s office can be seen in the video stopping the police from doing their work,” he said. The governor said, Ragesh stopped the police from doing their work. Maybe that’s why he was rewarded. He questioned that if the protest at Kannur University was sudden, then how did some of the protesters prepare posters and bring them?
Even the Raj Bhavan was not spared
Khan alleged that the entire focus of the state government was on silencing people with divergent views and even the Raj Bhavan was not spared. He said that the government also tried to interfere in the functioning of Raj Bhavan by inquiring about the recruitment of personnel and hence they took action against it.
This step had to be taken in compulsion – Governor
The governor said, he had to accept his mistake. I knew that the person (the government official who wrote the letter questioning the appointment) was innocent, but I wanted to send the message that these coercive tactics will not work for me. Even this did not open his eyes. Strategies to create pressure are still being adopted, he said. Because of this and other reasons, I have to raise this matter now.
Government cannot reduce our powers
Khan said the state government cannot dilute his powers as it was he who administered the oath of office to him and not vice versa. In a scathing attack on the Kerala government, Khan said it was a matter of shame that the main source of revenue for the state was lottery and sale of liquor. He also raised the issue of alleged political killings in Kannur, Chief Minister Vijayan’s home district, to target the Left government.
