ICC keeps an eye on Afghanistan cricket team, situation is not clear on participating in World Cup

After the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan, the future of cricket in the country is also in question. The situation in Afghanistan has become very serious with each passing day. The International Cricket Council has now become active regarding the changing situation in Afghanistan. According to reports, the ICC has kept a close watch on Afghanistan.

The ICC office in Dubai is in constant touch with members of the Afghanistan Cricket Board in Kabul. The biggest challenge for ACB is to preserve women’s cricket in the country. In 2020, 25 women players were included in the central contract for the first time.

A source from ICC Women’s Cricket said that there has been a big change and we don’t know what will happen. The ACB is aware that it is necessary to have a national women’s team to be a full member of the ICC, but given the current situation, there is a lot of uncertainty. Lisa Sthalekar, member of the ICC Women’s Cricket Committee, said, “As far as women’s cricket in Afghanistan is concerned, we have not received any information from the ICC about this.”

Situation not clear on playing World Cup

Despite the changes in the country, the cricket community is hopeful of the future of the game. Former ACB CEO Shafiqullah Stanikzai told Cricbuzz, “Cricket in Afghanistan started from the refugee camp and we have come a long way. We became full members despite limited resources. I hope and I pray that in Afghanistan Cricket continues to grow.”

Afghanistan’s star player Rashid Khan has already expressed concern over the whole matter. However, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi are believed to be playing in the IPL. But amid the current situation, nothing can be said on whether the Afghanistan team will be able to take part in the T20 World Cup this year.
