Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has resigned after leaving the country and has defended himself saying that he defended the motherland to the best of his ability and will continue to do so in future also. Rajapaksa’s resignation letter, sent from Singapore to Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhaywardene, was read during a special session of Parliament on Saturday. His resignation letter was read out by the Secretary of Parliament, Dhammika Dasnayake. The Sri Lankan Parliament met to announce the vacancy for the post of President after Rajapaksa’s resignation. Rajapaksa fled the country on Wednesday after protests erupted in Sri Lanka over the government’s failure to handle the economy.

Srilanka Crisis: Rajapaksa cited the Kovid-19 epidemic and lockdown as the reason behind the collapse of Sri Lanka’s economy in his resignation. Rajapaksa said that he took excellent steps like trying to form an all-party government to counter the economic slowdown. Rajapaksa wrote in his resignation letter. I protected the motherland with all my might and will continue to do so in future also. He said that within three months after he became the President, the whole world came under the grip of Kovid-19.

Srilanka Crisis: Rajapaksa said that despite being constrained by the already bad economic environment at that time, I took action to save people from the epidemic. He said that during 2020 and 2021, I was forced to order a lockdown and foreign exchange reserves started depleting. In my opinion, I have taken the best step to deal with the situation by suggesting the formation of an all-party or national government. Rajapaksa said in the letter, “On July 9, after coming to know about the wishes of the party leaders, I decided to resign. Let us tell you that he fled to Maldives on Wednesday and after that reached Singapore on Thursday. Singapore’s foreign ministry said Rajapaksa neither sought asylum nor was he granted asylum and that he was allowed to enter for a private visit.
