TRAI recommends internet subsidy for the poor, suggests a minimum speed of 2 Mbps

To promote internet connectivity in the country, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India i.e. TRAI has recommended subsidizing the internet to the poor. TRAI has told the government that a subsidy of Rs 200 per person should be given for broadband internet connection in rural areas. This amount can be given to the poor through Direct Benefit Transfer. Apart from this, TRAI has given other suggestions to the government.

2 Mbps is the minimum speed
According to TRAI, internet speed should increase for online studies and business activities along with work from home in the Corona period. For this internet speed needs to be increased from minimum 512 KBPS to 2 Mbps. TRAI says that to increase the speed, the cost of broadband service providers will have to be reduced. In such a situation, there will be a need to reduce the license fee.

‘Auction should be accelerated’
TRAI has said in its recommendation that the government should auction the available mid-band spectrum ie 3300 MHz to 3600 MHz early. To further increase the speed of mobile broadband, the allocation of spectrum in the mm-wave range for IMT-2020 purpose should be accelerated.

TRAI gave this advice
TRAI has advised the government for three categories of broadband service, which include increasing the minimum speed to 2 Mbps, fast service for download speed of 50 to 300 Mbps and super fast service above 300 Mbps. A user uses 13,462 MB of data in a month. At present, the minimum download speed of 512 KBPS is considered as a broadband connection.
