Controversy over Braverman’s reappointment as UK Home Secretary

London. Britain’s new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has started a new controversy by re-appointing Indian-origin Suella Braverman as Home Minister. Braverman, an outspoken critic of former PM Liz Truss’s economic policy, stepped down last week after breaching email security rules. In his resignation, he had raised concerns about the direction of the truce government. Labor MP Chris Bryant tweeted, “The appointment of Suella Braverman as Home Secretary just days after she was sacked for a security breach does not appear to be motivated by honesty, competence, professionalism or sensible politics.” It’s just cynical maneuvering. This PM is no better than the last two PMs. Braverman’s father is of Goan origin and mother is Tamil, but he was born in London. Braverman came out in support of Sunak, saying that she is the only candidate who is right and I am proud to support her.

Shortly after Braverman’s appointment, Sunak stated that he wanted to lead the Conservative Party with integrity, professionalism and accountability. Labor MP Yvette Cooper hit out at Sunak, saying, “Instead of this kind of anarchy, our national security and public safety are very important.” He said he wanted his government to have “honesty and accountability at every level”, yet he re-appointed Suella Braverman a minister a week after she resigned over security lapses, sending sensitive government information. The move is being seen as supporting Sunak. Questions were also raised on his stand on migration control, to which his own party has reacted sharply.

Backing Britain’s exit from the European Convention on Human Rights, Braverman says it is the only way for his country to solve immigration problems. “I would love to be the front page of The Telegraph with a plane flying to Rwanda… it’s my dream,” she said at a Conservative Party convention in October. it’s my passion. Braverman rejected the India-UK free trade agreement, saying he feared the deal would increase migration to the UK, when Indians already overstay visas. He blamed uncontrolled migration into the UK and a failure to integrate for the riots in Leicester. (IANS)
