India’s milk production increased by 6 percent, more than 1,000 startups formed in agriculture and dairy sector: PM Modi

PM Narendra Modi on Monday said milk production in the country has increased to 210 million tonnes from 146 million tonnes in 2014, an increase of 44 per cent. Addressing the dignitaries after inaugurating the International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit 2022 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, Modi said India is witnessing a growth of 6 per cent in milk production as against 2 per cent production growth globally. He further said that in the last 5-6 years more than 1,000 startups were created in the agriculture and dairy sector. The Prime Minister said that India is creating the largest database of dairy animals and every animal associated with the dairy sector is being tagged. He said that under the ‘Pashu Aadhar’ scheme, biometric identification of animals is being done with the help of modern technology.
Government’s emphasis on increasing production
He informed that the government is working on developing a blanched dairy ecosystem, where the challenges of the sectors are being addressed along with the focus on increasing the production. “Additional income for farmers, empowerment of the poor, sanitation, chemical-free farming, clean energy and cattle care are linked to this ecosystem,” he said. The Prime Minister said that unlike other developed countries of the world, the driving force of the dairy sector in India is small farmers. He said that India is the largest milk producing country based on the efforts of these small farmers having one, two or three cattle. This sector provides employment to more than eight crore families in the country.
A vast network of cooperatives
He reiterated that India has a vast network of dairy cooperatives and such an example cannot be found anywhere else in the whole world. The Prime Minister further informed that these dairy cooperatives collect milk twice a day from about two crore farmers in more than two lakh villages of the country and deliver it to the customers. He underlined that there is no middleman in the entire process and more than 70 per cent of the money received from the customers goes directly into the pockets of the farmers. Underlining the efficiency of the digital payment system in the dairy sector, he said that no other country in the world has this ratio. There are many lessons to be learned from other countries.
