Center’s earnings from petrol and diesel doubled in the financial year 2020-21, know how many people came to the treasury

Excise Duty on Petrol-Diesel: In the year 2020-21 of Corona epidemic, the Central Government’s income from excise duty on petrol and diesel has doubled. The Central Government has given this information in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. In 2020-21 (from April 2020 to March 2021), the central government has got revenue of Rs 3.72 lakh crore from excise duty on petrol diesel whereas in 2019-20 only Rs 1.78 lakh crore was received as excise duty.

If we look at the reasons for the increase in earnings from excise duty, in 2019, the government used to impose excise duty of Rs 19.98 per liter on petrol and Rs 15.83 per liter on diesel. But in 2020, the excise duty was increased twice last year. And excise duty was collected by the central government by taxing Rs 32.98 per liter on petrol and Rs 31.83 on diesel. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary said that in the financial year 2020-21, Rs 19,972 crore was given to the state governments as tax from the money collected under Central Excise.

But amidst all the criticism over the rising prices and inflation of petrol and diesel, the central government cut the excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per liter and diesel by Rs 10 per liter just a day before Diwali.

How much is the excise duty on petrol and diesel

The total excise duty on petrol is currently Rs 27.90 per liter and that on diesel is Rs 21.80. States get their share of basic excise duty only. The basic excise duty on petrol is Rs 1.40 per liter. Whereas additional excise duty is levied at Rs 11 and road and infrastructure cess of Rs 13 per liter. On top of this, agriculture infrastructure and development surcharge of Rs 2.50 is also levied.

Similarly, the basic excise duty on diesel is Rs 1.80 per liter. Rs 8 per liter is charged as additional excise duty and road and infrastructure surcharge, while Rs 4 per liter is charged as agriculture infrastructure and development surcharge.
