New Delhi: The festival of Basant Panchami which will be celebrated on Saturday February 5 this year marks the arrival of the spring season in India. It is celebrated every year on the 5th day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Magha, usually around the end of January or February. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati who is a symbol of knowledge, music and art in Hinduism. Devotees perform Saraswati Puja rituals during Anubujh Muhurta as it is considered an auspicious time. The ideal time to worship Goddess Saraswati is early morning during Panchami Tithi (fifth tithi). However, the whole day is considered auspicious. (basant panchmi)

Basant Panchami Saraswati Puja Method
Mango wood and leaves, Kesar, Haldi, Akshat, Kumkum, Gangajal, Kalash, Naivedya, Havan Samidha, Sandalwood, Shodash Matrix, Saraswati Yantra and Durva Dal are required for worship. People usually wear yellow clothes during the puja and prepare saffron sweets as prasad.
How to do Saraswati Puja
To start the Basant Panchami Puja, spread a yellow/red cloth on a wooden platform and then place a picture or idol of Goddess Saraswati on it. Keep your books or your children’s school books at the feet of Goddess Saraswati. Light a lamp with ghee/mustard oil or sesame oil and also light some incense sticks. During your prayer, invite Maa Saraswati to accept your offerings and devotion. (basant panchmi)
