Ashwin returned to Chennai after retiring from international cricket

A day after announcing his retirement from international cricket midway through the Test series against Australia, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returned home without any fanfare here on Thursday.

Local officials of Chennai International Airport brought Ashwin out. Meanwhile, fans took his photographs but he went to his home without talking to the media persons.

Ashwin surprised everyone on Wednesday by announcing his retirement from international cricket after the rain-affected third Test match against Australia in Brisbane ended in a draw.

Ashwin, however, will continue to play club cricket including the Indian Premier League (IPL). He will represent Chennai Super Kings in the next season of IPL. After Anil Kumble, he is second in the list of bowlers taking most wickets in Test cricket for India.

He took 537 wickets in 106 matches. Kumble has taken 619 wickets in Test cricket. Ashwin played 116 ODIs for India, taking 156 wickets, while he took 72 wickets in 65 T20 Internationals. Ashwin started his career in international cricket in the one-day format in 2010. A year later, he made his debut in Test cricket.
