New Delhi. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Saturday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to take strict legal action against “elements” who mislead people. He took this step amid allegations by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that the MCD is planning to build new garbage dump sites in the city, while it failed to clear the ‘mountain’ of garbage at the existing three landfill sites. In a series of tweets, Saxena said that the MCD has cleared 26.1 lakh metric tonnes of old waste in the last four months and the height of the mound has reduced by 10-15 metres. He also said that there are no plans to build “a single” new dumping site in the city.
The MCD elections are expected to be held by December this year. In view of this, AAP has stepped up its attack on MCD and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over “lack of sanitation” in Delhi and “mountains of garbage” at “landfill sites” in Bhalswa, Okhla and Ghazipur.
AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday visited the Ghazipur ‘landfill’ site and claimed that the MCD is planning to develop 16 more ‘landfill sites’ in the city.
“Contrary to false claims by some vested interests, not a single new dumping site is planned by MCD in the city,” Saxena tweeted. In another tweet, he said, “Directed MCD to take strict legal action against the elements who are misleading Delhi.”
The MCD had said on Friday that there was no plan to build any new dumping site in the city. It had also said that 77 lakh metric tonnes of old waste has been processed so far from the city’s three ‘landfill sites’, which have assumed the shape of a small mountain over the years.
The BJP is in power in all the three municipal corporations since 2007. All the three municipal corporations are now integrated. The elections for 250 MCD wards are expected to be held around December and the Delhi State Election Commission has started preparations for the same.
Delhi generates about 11,000 metric tonnes of waste, a significant portion of which is dumped at three landfill sites at Ghazipur, Bhalswa and Okhla. The city currently has a cumulative waste processing capacity of 8,213 tonnes per day. (Language)
