Kabul | Afghanistan Quran Controversy : Recently, there is an atmosphere of communal tension in India after the remarks made on Prophet Mohammad. Due to this, India is also facing a lot of tension at the international level. Now a similar case has come to light from India’s neighboring country Afghanistan as well. The Taliban government has arrested well-known fashion model Ajmal Haqiqi on charges of insulting Islam and the Quran. In a viral video, he was purportedly seen laughing while reciting verses from the Quran with his three friends. After the video went viral, the Taliban government ordered his arrest.

Afghanistan Quran Controversy : The Taliban-appointed Directorate General of Intelligence arrested Ajmal and three of his associates on June 5. Later on the same day another video of Ajmal was released, in which he is seen apologizing for his actions. Here, Ajmal’s arrest is being condemned on Twitter and his release is also being demanded. International voluntary organization Amnesty International has also condemned his arrest. According to Amnesty International, last week Ajmal posted a video on his YouTube channel in which he was purportedly seen “laughing and reciting verses from the Quran with three of his colleagues”. Later on June 5, Ajmal posted another video apologizing for the previous video.

Campaigner Samira Hamidi reacted…

Afghanistan Quran Controversy : Amnesty International’s South Asia campaigner Samira Hamidi has reacted to the arrests of Ajmal and his associates. Arbitrarily detaining YouTuber Ajmal and his associates and forcing them to apologise is an open attack on the right to freedom of expression, he said. The Taliban should immediately release them unconditionally.
