Action will be taken if betting advertisements are shown, Centre’s news website, strict advice to TV channels

The Information Ministry has issued a separate guideline to news publishers on digital media and OTT platforms not to show such advertisements to Indian audiences.

Central government has once again issued an advisory regarding advertisements. The Center has advised news websites, OTT platforms and private TV channels to avoid showing advertisements of online satta centres. In the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Information, it has been said that private TV channels are strictly advised to stay away from showing advertisements of online satta centers. The ministry said that the government had received such information that along with television OTT Platform But a number of sports channels have recently been showing advertisements for offshore online betting platforms as well as their surrogate news websites. The advisory has been issued after getting evidence of this and it has been said that these included direct and surrogate advertisements like Fairplay, Parimatch, Betway, Wolf 777 and 1xbet.

The ministry said in the advisory that online offshore betting platforms are now using news websites as a surrogate product for advertising betting platforms on digital media. In such cases, the ministry found that the logos of surrogate news websites are similar to those of betting platforms. Apart from these, the ministry said that neither such betting platform nor news website is registered under any legal authority in India. Such websites are promoting betting and gambling in the form of surrogate advertising under the guise of news.

If violated, action will be taken

The ministry issued an advisory saying that, since betting and gambling are illegal in most parts of the country, advertisements for these betting platforms as well as their rentals are illegal. These advisories have been issued under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and IT Rules 2021. The ministry said that such advertisements violate these rules. The ministry has strongly advised TV channels, digital news websites to avoid such advertisements and advertisements of surrogate products, strict action can be taken if found violating.
