55,575 crore GST evasion in two years, 719 people arrested
New Delhi. GST authorities have caught tax evasion of Rs 55,575 crore in the last two years and over 700 people have been arrested in these cases for causing damage to the exchequer. An official gave this information on Thursday.
Officials of the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) have detected over 22,300 fake GST Identification Numbers (GSTINs). On November 9, 2020, the government had launched a nationwide special campaign against those taking advantage of Input Tax Credit (ITC) without supplying goods and services and issuing bogus bills and thereby evading GST.
An official said that it has been two years since this particular operation and during this period a fraud of Rs 55,575 crore was detected. 719 people have been arrested out of which 20 are professional CA/CS. A voluntary deposit of Rs 3,050 crore was made in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) during this period. (Language)
